Toothpaste has been around for longer than you’d expect. The ancient Greeks and Romans used crushed oyster shells to give them a winning smile. Other historical treatments included the ashes from burnt mice heads.
But whilst we’ve taken massive leaps in the ingredients, the tube itself hasn’t really changed since it was first produced in 1892. (Except it’s no longer made of lead.) But student Nicole Pannuzzo is attempting to change all that with her origami-inspired paper tube that’s designed to squeeze out every last drop of paste (and still stand up properly).
Pannuzzo, who studies design at Arizona State University, even went to the trouble of redesigning the Colgate logo to reflect her accordion-esque pack after learning that the original logo was a ribbon.
After over 100 prototypes, she’s definitely cut her teeth in the design world.
